I'm usually not one to dedicate an entire post to my hair. It kind of makes me feel funny. However..I have received a surprising amount of emails in regards to my hairstyle, and recently I was flagged down at the gas station and nearly pulled from my car as to be interrogated about my hair.So I've decided to give some info and a little FAQ about my haircut.
I'm a hairstylist. I've been doing hair for a grand total of 6 years now, so short hair isn't scary to me. In fact I prefer it. I've had a LOT of style variations over the years, and my favorites were always the really short ones.
When my hair was long I always felt like this:
No matter how much time I spent styling it, it never looked like I wanted it to. I loved the versatility of doing cute up styles, but found myself putting it up every single day. As a mom I knew I needed something quick and easy that made me feel chic. Oh, and it had to not look like mom hair. Even though technically I am a mom so it is mom hair.
I contacted my cousin who is a-maz-ing. She's always been uber stylish, and did an internship with Stuart Fraser in Provo. Check out the 4th review down. Having a good stylist is key. I once paid a ridiculous amount for a short haircut I hated. It has everything to do with the stylist, one who will LISTEN. As a stylist myself I find it crucial to ask a lot of questions. If I had one good tip for getting a good cut, it would be to come really prepared with a good description of what you're looking for and most importantly what you're NOT looking for. I always find myself asking my clients what they don't like, and what they don't want. Which really helps me know what to stay away from.
I sent my stylist several pictures of what I was looking for. I knew I wanted something short, a-symmetric, and semi edgy with a sweet touch. Good description right? I loved the idea of a sophisticated pixie:
Oh this is so gorgeous. But I wasn't ready to go that far. Yet. I wanted to have some length that gave me a bit more styling versatility.
This was the all time mother inspiration:

To answer some of your questions:
Q Do you like your short haircut?
A I love it. I think it's my most favorite hairstyle I've ever had. And that's saying something!
Q Do you ever regret it?
A No. I don't regret it at all. Most times I wish I had done it sooner. When I work out, I sometimes miss pulling my hair back, and when I see a cute style like this, I miss doing up styles, but never enough to regret it.
Q Is it easier or harder to do then long hair?
A Regular and daily styling is much quicker and than it was to put in the amount of work to make my long hair look chic. It only takes me about 10 minutes to style when I have to wash it and blow it out, and under 5 minutes if I don't have to wash it. However, there is a trade off. Something I didn't quite prepare myself for. It's really high maintenance to maintain the cut. With long hair I felt like I could get away with going long periods of time without a cut. With this cut I literally feel like I need it cut every 2 weeks. It starts to get long and full so fast. It's ok for me because I can touch it up and thin it out myself.
Q Is your hair curly or wavy?
A My hair is quite wavy. It's medium thick and has a lot of volume and wave to it, which is helpful. The wave helps a lot when I want to just wash and wear.
Q What color do you use?
A My stylist uses an all over high lift made by Redken to give it a golden base, and then she adds really blond high lights with bleach mostly around my face.
Q What kind of products do you use?
A I use 2 styling products. An organic shine serum called DermOrganic made with Argon Oil (this was amazing for long hair too), and a Bed Head product called Manipulator. I also like Redken Rewind.
Q Does your husband like the new do?
A He is head over heels. I'm lucky to have a husband whose views about hair are contrary to the majority of the male population. He's a fan of short hair and likes it best on me. He says he likes it when he can see my face.
Overall, I have to say that there's something really liberating about wearing a short cut. I feel like I have nothing to hide behind, and I have to present myself and my style without the assistance of extravagant hairstyles. If there are any other questions that I may have left out, lay em on me!
