The One With the Hair

I'm usually not one to dedicate an entire post to my hair. It kind of makes me feel funny. However..I have received a surprising amount of emails in regards to my hairstyle, and recently I was flagged down at the gas station and nearly pulled from my car as to be interrogated about my hair.So I've decided to give some info and a little FAQ about my haircut.

I'm a hairstylist. I've been doing hair for a grand total of 6 years now, so short hair isn't scary to me. In fact I prefer it. I've had a LOT of style variations over the years, and my favorites were always the really short ones.

When my hair was long I always felt like this:
No matter how much time I spent styling it, it never looked like I wanted it to. I loved the versatility of doing cute up styles, but found myself putting it up every single day. As a mom I knew I needed something quick and easy that made me feel chic. Oh, and it had to not look like mom hair. Even though technically I am a mom so it is mom hair.

I contacted my cousin who is a-maz-ing. She's always been uber stylish, and did an internship with Stuart Fraser in Provo. Check out the 4th review down. Having a good stylist is key. I once paid a ridiculous amount for a short haircut I hated. It has everything to do with the stylist, one who will LISTEN. As a stylist myself I find it crucial to ask a lot of questions. If I had one good tip for getting a good cut, it would be to come really prepared with a good description of what you're looking for and most importantly what you're NOT looking for. I always find myself asking my clients what they don't like, and what they don't want. Which really helps me know what to stay away from.

I sent my stylist several pictures of what I was looking for. I knew I wanted something short, a-symmetric, and semi edgy with a sweet touch. Good description right? I loved the idea of a sophisticated pixie:

Oh this is so gorgeous. But I wasn't ready to go that far. Yet. I wanted to have some length that gave me a bit more styling versatility.

This was the all time mother inspiration:

Meet an Urban Outfitters model. I am 100% in love with her hair.

We also loved
Sienna's cut.

To answer some of your questions:

Q Do you like your short haircut?
A I love it. I think it's my most favorite hairstyle I've ever had. And that's saying something!
Q Do you ever regret it?
A No. I don't regret it at all. Most times I wish I had done it sooner. When I work out, I sometimes miss pulling my hair back, and when I see a cute style like this, I miss doing up styles, but never enough to regret it.

Q Is it easier or harder to do then long hair?
A Regular and daily styling is much quicker and than it was to put in the amount of work to make my long hair look chic. It only takes me about 10 minutes to style when I have to wash it and blow it out, and under 5 minutes if I don't have to wash it. However, there is a trade off. Something I didn't quite prepare myself for. It's really high maintenance to maintain the cut. With long hair I felt like I could get away with going long periods of time without a cut. With this cut I literally feel like I need it cut every 2 weeks. It starts to get long and full so fast. It's ok for me because I can touch it up and thin it out myself.
Q Is your hair curly or wavy?
A My hair is quite wavy. It's medium thick and has a lot of volume and wave to it, which is helpful. The wave helps a lot when I want to just wash and wear.
Q What color do you use?
A My stylist uses an all over high lift made by Redken to give it a golden base, and then she adds really blond high lights with bleach mostly around my face.
Q What kind of products do you use?
A I use 2 styling products. An organic shine serum called DermOrganic made with Argon Oil (this was amazing for long hair too), and a Bed Head product called Manipulator. I also like Redken Rewind.
Q Does your husband like the new do?
A He is head over heels. I'm lucky to have a husband whose views about hair are contrary to the majority of the male population. He's a fan of short hair and likes it best on me. He says he likes it when he can see my face.

Overall, I have to say that there's something really liberating about wearing a short cut. I feel like I have nothing to hide behind, and I have to present myself and my style without the assistance of extravagant hairstyles. If there are any other questions that I may have left out, lay em on me!

Add my hubby to that minority of men as well. He loves my short hair and would LOVE for me to get that pixie....maybe when I lose 25 pounds and my skin finally stops breaking out ;) Bottom line: If you're happy with your hair, it shows. And THAT is always sexy, regardless of the length.

Sarah, I love this post! Those were some of the styles I have been eyeballing too, but I am still going with yours. Creepy? i hope not but more flattering. Thanks again for your answers!

I just HAD to respond to this post...

i'm currently growing out my short hair (which is both exciting and scary). i LOVED having short hair... i went all over from a shaggy cut to a short pixie.

i decided to grow it out because it had been about 8 years since i had long hair and i would like to have a pony tail again. because, well... why not? also, i now have to wear glasses all the time (instead of lovely contacts) and i like the way longer hair frames the glasses. i'm experimenting...

but let me tell you... i love short hair! i never felt sexier... and my husband loves short hair too. he says it shows how daring a girl is...

its strange because i used to get compliments from guys all the time about my hair... yes, there were some who said i "should grow my hair" to which i replied "lets not talk about who should grow what, ok?" but honestly i found more women were turned off by short hair then men were.

i'm sure i'll go back to a pixie eventually... until then i'll live vicariously through you.

lookin' good!

seeing as i was one of the inquirers... :o) i think your is way BETTER than any of the inspiration looks. i did cut my long locks too. not as short as i want, because i think my stylist is a bit nervous about me regretting it, but we'll work into it.

i am lovin' sugarlands jennifer nettles hair, check it out in the 'stuck like glue' video. i'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

I hope one day I can come out and try a shorter hair cut.

9 times out of 10, when i comment on your blog, it's to tell you i still can't get over how perfect your hair is! I unfortunately can't wear mine that short because I have a round, chubby face. I have to have length in the front that falls below my chin. Definitely most flattering for me is a swing bob. I get bored though, so change it a lot. I grew it out the past year to almost mid-back. I was very committed to make it to the end of the year, but I found myself the day after Thanksgiving hanging with a hairstylist and in minutes, my hair was just below the chin. it's so liberating!

Perfect timing on this post! I have short hair right now, but I'm planning to get it cut a bit shorter next weekend and was planning to use some of your photos to show my hairdresser. :)

This is a perfectly timed post. I am currently pondering having my hair cut short (again). Thanks for the reminders about the benefits.

You have a really pretty face and can where short hair well. I don't think I could ever pull it off. I hated my hair to my chin! lol

I think your hair is very cute. Doing my hair everyday is horrible! I don't have a baby yet, but when I do something is going to have to change! lol

i absolutely love your hair.. totally adore how you can so easily pull it off. i cut my hair into a bob in 9th grade and took a long hard look in the mirror and told myself, "jen, you look horrible with short hair". i haven't trimmed it more than an inch at a time since then (granted bobs are so not very cute). ha ha.

im going to try that long style bun in that pic today..

i know this is a long shot and you may have many people asking you for the same thing i am about to but i need your help!! i'm trying to spread the word as fast i can. my aunt and uncle's home caught fire last weekend and they lost everything. even worse they have no insurance on their home so everything is a complete loss. they have nothing. my friend jenna rammell approached me and wanted to get the blogging community together and do something for a family in need. i immediately suggested my aunt and uncle. last night we got the ball rolling and started "bloggers give back project". we are having an online auction dec 15-16 by which we will raise and donate all proceeds to them. i am trying to find anyone who is wiling to help. i thought of you. we are looking for handmade business owners, etsy shops and photographers to donate their time and talents. our site is bloggersgivebackproject.blogspot.com and our email is bloggersgivebackproject@gmail.com. if you are willing we would love to have you help spread this like wildfire. please let me know if you can help. the gmail account above is the best place to email me. thank you for hearing me out!

A friend just sent me your link. A few months ago I made the same change only I was VERY hesitant and was sad for days. I am still up and down with how I feel about it. I miss long hair! This is a lot easier, and I was thinking of growing it to a bit more of a bob. We had some of the same inspiration photos -- crazy! I LOVE ginnifer goodwyn's cut. I think about going even shorter all the time. I am really torn.

Anyway...your hair is really cute! I love it. Looks so great on you.

I loved this post!, Sarah! It's so refreshing to hear from someone who feels just as beautiful and sexy with short hair as they do with long (or even more sexy as in your case :) I think you look gorgeous and love all the versatile styles you can do with your locks!! XO

My husband's the same way - he likes my hair short. Sometimes it makes me sad because I love messy buns and flipping it all into an easy up-do, but you're exactly right - it tends to go up every single day when it's long. Mid-cheek length is perfect for me...I have too much hair to go shorter.

Your hair is DARLING!! Love it soo much!! Short hair does not look good on me at all,but I love it in other people. I cut my hair into a bob after my second kiddos was born. HATED it!! It is finally long again and I like it so much better!! My point is, that I wasn't confident when I had shorter hair so I felt ugly, but you are confidant with short hair(which you should be since it looks fabulous!!) and it shows. Your hair is trendy and super cute!! Hope you have a fabulous day!!! hugs!! Britt

This post really hit home for me...

I am in hair funk right now and I FEEL like your long hair pic! I am going to take the plunge on Monday and cut it off. Not as short as yours (my round face and pale irish/winter skin wouldn't allow it), but I am going to take off 6-7 inches and go a little geometric. As a new mom who feels not-so-much like my old self, I need a major change...So thank you for the inspiration!

Your short hair is so cute and spunky! I love how much you can do with it. Wish I could pull that off, but my face is way too round :/

Every time I cut my hair shorter again, I think to myself, "why didn't I do this a month (or two) ago?" Lopping off all that heavy hair feels so good!
Cheers!

Love having my hair short too! I had some friend's over this past week and they were looking at pictures on the shelfs of my home and one said to me, "I like your hair now." I just laughed because I so wanted that long beautiful hair for so many years and fought going short. I don't think my hair will ever be long again. :o)

I cut my hair off a few month ago really short and it grew back SO fast. It was so rough for me! I felt like I was always bordering Kate Goselin which I REALLY didn't want! Yours is pretty much perfect and makes me want to try it again!! LOVE love short haired girls! They are brave and I am all about it!
